Perseveration is the involuntary repetition of a thought, feeling, or action — even after the reason for it has passed. It's not choosing to think about something. It's getting stuck.
It's different from worry. Worry is about the future. Perseveration loops on something that already happened, or a thought that won't resolve — replaying a conversation, fixating on a mistake, circling a question with no answer.
It's different from hyperfocus. Hyperfocus feels productive and chosen. Perseveration feels stuck and involuntary. You often know you're doing it but can't stop.
How it makes life hard:
  • You can't move on from a conversation that went wrong
  • A small mistake replays for hours or days
  • You lose track of time inside a thought loop
  • You miss meals, sleep, or plans because you're stuck
  • People tell you to "just stop thinking about it" — but you can't
  • The exhaustion after a loop feels physical
  • It can look like you're fine on the outside while your mind is on fire inside
It's common in autism, ADHD, OCD, and anxiety. It's linked to differences in executive function — specifically the brain's ability to shift between tasks and thoughts. It's not a choice, a character flaw, or something you can willpower through.
This app doesn't fix perseveration. It gives you a place to put the thought down, check in with your body, and try a strategy. Sometimes that's enough to shift. Sometimes it's not — and that's okay too.
